Choosing Your Aquarium Style

Choosing the right aquarium style involves multiple considerations, such as your aesthetic sense, your budget, and the nature of the space. With that in mind, here are some general rules that you should keep in mind when deciding which aquarium style works best for you:

  • If you can, you will want to avoid direct sunlight hitting your aquarium, as this will enhance the growth of unsightly algae, requiring more frequent cleanings.
  • Consider choosing a high-traffic area to maximize the aquarium’s visibility, and so, your enjoyment of it.
  • If you choose to install an aquarium in a den, office or study, make sure it is facing where one would sit or a desk. It will serve as a wonderful distraction.
  • If you have plenty of space, 360 or curved aquariums are a great choice. If space is limited, consider in wall and corner aquariums, which are space savers.
  • Aquariums with a curved front look great against a flat wall, adding a new dimension to the room while increasing the visual appeal of the aquarium itself.
  • If an aquarium is in the center of a room or viewable from multiple floors, a viewable 360 degree aquarium can add considerable visual interest. If you decide to go this route, consider symmetrical designs, such as a cube, an elongated tall cube or a cylinder. These shapes tend to work best for the 360 design.
  • Custom cabinetry may help an aquarium to blend into a room with existing furniture, making the aquarium not look like an afterthought, but part of the surrounding.
