Project Specs

Aquarium Size:

350 gallon tank
, 96 x 24 x 36 (L x W x H in inches)

Aquarium Type:

Freshwater Fish and Artificial Plants Mixed with Stone and Driftwood.

Animals to Be Housed:

A Variety of “Community” Freshwater Fish.

Design Specific Elements:

Purpose of aquarium is to divide space between a retail sales floor and a lounge area. The tank would be viewable from three sides ad be a room divider or see through aquarium.

Hot Vapes is a wholesale electronic cigarette supplier as well as a lab manufacturing vaping juice, alternatives to smoking. The owner saw an opportunity after visiting Vape shops in New York and along the East Coast. These shops featured a lounge area for congregating and vaping, which allows people to meet, sample and discuss vaping.

Needs and Challenges

The client initially wanted to divide their sales floor and lounge with a curved, J shaped aquarium. While this was doable, it would also be a much more costly design. To have the best of both worlds, we presented Hot Vapes with a standard rectangle shape designed to be more cost effective, while still achieving their design goals.

The Process

Our design and planning process moved along smoothly. However, working directly with a client’s contractor rather than a designer or architect can often present us with unique challenges. At the time of installation the general contractor had unfortunately become overwhelmed with the project, and we found the required support stands were not up to code for the 3,000 lb weight of the aquarium. Fortunately, we problem solved on our end to build the appropriate stand and still install the tank before the shop opened two weeks later.

The Results

The freshwater tank, despite some hiccups in the process, turned out to be one of our favorites. The space is a modern and somewhat raw interior with exposed brick, pipes and ventilation with black and red colors. The natural aquarium contrasts the rawness with lush green plants, stones, driftwood and teeming aquarium life. The aquarium divide adds perfect balance and harmony to the shop as a whole, adding a slice of nature into an urban setting. Due to our positive working relationship, Hot Vapes continues to be a service client we maintain today.

The results turned out to be one of my favorite freshwater aquariums as well as a service client we still maintain today.

Experience Highlights
  • Saved a client big money over their original concept with a less customized aquarium they were still thrilled with.
  • Turned a challenging situation into a rewarding one by stepping in when the general contractor fell short.
  • Watched out for our client’s best interest, resisting intimidation to use a support system that wasn’t up to par.

Take your interior spaces to the
next level with a custom aquarium.
