The Client

We were originally contacted by a construction company who was looking for a custom aquarium to be built in a new financial firm opening in downtown Chicago, to match their existing New York City office. However, before the large project got underway, we learned the owner was relocating to the Gold Coast ahead of the opening and was interested in working with us on a home aquarium. We put a pin in the office project and switched gears to get this aquarium up and running first.

Needs and Challenges

The owner of the financial firm was familiar with the 400 gallon reef aquarium in their NYC office, and wanted a similar aquarium feature in their new Chicago home. The goal for this project was to design an aquarium as large as possible to create a showstopping piece in the client’s home, without sacrificing functionality in the given space.

The largest challenge in installing this aquarium was actually getting the aquarium in place because of its size— it was 9 feet long, and large all around. Fortunately, just a few days before our installation a portion of drywall had been removed from the ceiling to move in a 10 foot couch. Our moving team followed the same path to successfully get the 9 foot long aquarium and even larger custom metal support stand in place.

The Process

The teams that collaborated in designing and planning this aquarium include Blue Planet, Exclusive Woodworking / NuHaus Inc, the interior designer, architect, and general contractor.

With great communication and collaboration between all parties, our plan was made very clear and ran smoothly throughout. The aquarium changed dimensions a half dozen times in the design process, and we ultimately settled on a custom fabricated, cantilevered metal support stand to ensure the millwork to fit properly. Such a system was made possible by working with the engineers at NuHaus, who designed one of the finest architectural millwork cabinets we’ve ever seen.

With functionality being a core focus of the project, we designed the aquarium so that it could be accessed by lifting one, very heavy, nearly 9 foot long by 4 foot tall door above the tank. As a result aquarium access is extremely convenient for those who service the tank and feed the fish.

The Results

Knowing that there was a significant budget for this project, we were able to include equipment that featured all the latest technology for easy maintenance, including automated chemical dosing, monitoring equipment, cell phone apps to control lights and pumps, and more.

This aquarium is already one of our modern favorites. The client has Blue Planet come out for weekly services so we can keep the tank looking its best. The population of fish and corals is added to weekly, and we will continue to keep videos and images on our Instagram and Facebook pages so you can track the progress.
